‘Yahoo boy'. A term familiar to almost every Nigerian. It makes headlines frequently on popular media. For some, the word(s) brings out disgust and anger from them, for others, it might be envy and a yearning for wealth. But some might ask, who are yahoo boys?


Yahoo boys, as they are known, are in simple term, fraudsters. They use various methods to get away with peoples money. They could lie, deceive, or make fake promises to gullible people, until the person sends them the money. Then they vanish or continue tricking them with lies to get more of their money.

Some yahoo boys employ the service of traditional herbalist, to increase their chances of successfully duping their 'clients'. They would make sacrifices of animals, money, and sometimes humans, to help them succeed. They have also been known to have engaged in various acts, at the direction of the herbalist. Some would walk naked publicly, eat harmful things, and do very disgusting acts. All in assurance by the herbalist that they would help them succeed.

Obviously, the society does not look favorably on yahoo boys. The harmful effects it has on individuals and the society is wide and large. It could destroy the life of the person that was duped. It also paints a bad image on the nation. Young children and teenagers would want to follow in their ways as they are attracted by the lavish spending displayed by most yahoo boys.

Some characteristics have also been attributed to yahoo boys by the society: dreaded hairs, carrying iPhone, wearing oversized clothes, and some others. Unfortunately, some people would immediately label anyone with some of these characteristics as a yahoo boy. This is wrong. Anyone should be able to have his or her own fashion sense without being labeled falsely as a Yahoo boy. It is not a simple allegation to call someone a yahoo boy, so we should make sure not to judge by outer appearances.

This is basically just the same as asking how yahoo boys scam people or how does yahoo boys work?

First of all, you have to be aware that the top successful Yahoo boys do not operate alone or use one single method to scam people. These evil perpetrators usually operate as a group or a large network of like-minded people with different roles in their scamming business. They use different “formats” in scamming people and some of their popular formats include;

- Impersonation or Phishing
- Offering to sell expensive items at ridiculously cheap prices
- Offering to sell imported products like Tokunbo cars at cheaper prices by claiming to be traders or dealers operating from land borders
- Running fake Advertisements to lure vulnerable people
- Social Media dating using fake identities
- Posing as Nigerian Customs officers sneaking to sell seized items at cheaper prices
- Bank Credit/Debit card details theft and so many more that are even yet to be established
